The history of poker is not
one that is really clear. There are some
conflicts about where the game of poker came
from. The object of the game came from the
French country but it is not clear where the
origins of poker itself lies as it is seen
through history in so many different ways. Poker
resembles the Persian game of nas, and may have
been taught to French settlers in New Orleans by
Persian sailors. This history also share some
Renaissance history with the game of primero and
the French brelan. So you can see where the
confusion lies in the history of poker. It is
believed that the earlier games influenced the
development of poker, as it exists now as it was
an evolving game, one that changed over the
years.
There once
was an English actor Joseph Crowell who reported
that the game was played in New Orleans in 1829
with a deck of twenty cards. There were four
players betting on which of the player's hand
was the most valuable so betting was going on
all over the table. Gambling was known as a
common pastime for many on the Mississippi
riverboats where there was much other to do in
that time of history.
Not long
after when poker was seen on the river boats,
the 52-card English deck was invented and the
flush was introduced and added to the game of
poker. Around the time of the American Civil
War, many additions were made, including draw
poker, stud poker, and the straight. The game of
poker was evolving to meet the ongoing
entertainment needs of people everywhere. More
American updates were added like the wild card,
lowball and split-pot poker which make the game
even more exciting. The news of the new poker
spread to other countries, particularly in Asia
, and it connected to the U.S. military. The
history of poker can be followed like a
timeline.
The game
and talk of poker has become important to
American culture and English culture. Phrases
like ace in the hole, beats me, blue chip, call
your bluff, cash in, pass the buck, and poker
face. These terms are used in everyday poker
games around the world and have become part of
the game.
The
popularity of the game of poker has increased in
the recent years, due to the introduction of
poker online and in invention of the hole-card
camera, which finally turned the game into a
spectator sport. It is hard for viewers to
follow the action and intense drama of the game
so this spectator sport was one that was not
actually all that popular.

Playing Video Poker requires only a basic
understanding of the makeup of various poker hands.
The game play itself is simple yet understanding
exactly which cards to hold or discard will take
practice and knowledge. When begining play choose
the coin size you want to play. Then choose exactly
how many coins you want to bet. Then all you need to
do is click deal to start a game. Your first hand of
cards will then be displayed in the play area on
your screen. Make sure you look them over carefully.
You should evaluate the cards in your hand and
compare them with the payout schedule on your
screen. Any winning hands will be indicated on the
payout schedule and, if you have automatic hold
enabled, the cards will automatically be kept for
you.
In power poker you will be able to
hold an entire column of cards by clicking on the card in that row in the first
hand and unselect a column of cards by clicking on that card again. Each time
you choose to keep a card a bar saying held will be displayed across the card.
Hold the cards that can potentially
give you the highest payout.
Click the draw button to get your
new cards. If your cards make up a winning hand you will be offered an
opportunity to double your money or to collect your winnings.
If you have won, the game will offer
you an additional opportunity to increase your winnings by participating in a
doubling phase.
The allow double option in the
otions menu of the game, is on by default. This toggles the doubling option on
or off, so you can choose the option you want. If this option is not turned on
the game will not allow you to double on a winning hand.
The doubling option gives you a
chance to increase your winnings. After completing a winning hand you will be
given the chance to double the payout, or to collect your winnings. The double
and collect buttons will be highlighted. To collect your winnings, click the
collect button. The game will then be finished and you will have a chance to
play again. If you want to try and win even more, click the double button.
When you click the double button,
the cards will be removed from the screen and a further five cards will replace
them. The dealers' card will be exposed, while the remaining four cards will be
left face down. Select one of the face down cards by clicking on it. The four
cards will be revealed and the card you selected will be highlighted. If the
card you chose has a denomination greater than that of the dealers' card, you
will win an amount double that of your original payout. You will then be given
the chance to double your payout again or to collect your winnings. If your
chosen card is of an equal denomination, it is a tie, and you will have a chance
to collect your original winnings or to double up. If the card you chose is of a
lesser denomination, you lose and will not receive any payout.
Once you have collected your
winnings you can begin another hand by clicking on the deal button.
Video Poker is without a doubt a
skill based game. This is due to being able to hold
certain cards in order to improve your 5 card hand.
With certain strategies it is possible to receive a
long term win. Professional Video Poker Players know
this and only play Video Poker as with certain
versions you have a huge advantage over the house
and will always come out on top and win money. Below
is a table of what to do with specific cards. It is
important that you learn this and do not stray from
the basic strategy.

Please bare in mind that for Jacks
or Better Poker you would want to only hold jack
thru ace instead of 10 when you only have high
cards. Also you would not want to hold two pair with
Deuces Wild Poker, as the lowest paying combination
is 3 of a kind and there is more chance recieving a
3 of a kind rarther then a full house. This strategy
has been created in order for you to stand more of a
chance of winning money. It would be wise to stick
to this strategy as overall you will beat the house.
Once you have mastered the basic
strategy for a type of Video poker, and find a
high-paying machine, then you can expect to make
money in the long run. What does this mean? It means
that after about 50,000 hands, the odds dictate that
you will have hit every possible hand combination,
including the coveted Royal Flush. Sure, that sounds
like a lot of hands, but this game can go very
quickly, especially for experienced players. It is
not uncommon for a skilled Video poker player to
turn in 750 hands an hour - and even more if that
person is playing two machines at once. If the
player keeps this blazing pace up for eight hours a
day, it will take just over eight days for the
player to reach an expected win of around $1,750.
You can see why some people are very serious about
this game - because you can really win at it. The
only drawbacks are the time commitment required, and
the potential swings in bankroll. Just because the
odds say you should get a royal flush every 40,390
hands doesn't mean it's guaranteed. You could go
five times that many hands a never hit one, or get
five in the first hundred hands. Both scenarios are
equally improbable, yet quite possible. Such is the
allure of chance. Such is the allure of Video poker.

This chart
represents the pay schedule of a 9/6 Jacks or Better
game playing the maximum five unit bet. The reason
you should always play the maximum five units
because this bet is required to win the 4,000 coin
(or max) jackpot. If you got a royal flush playing
only one or two coins, the payout would not be
proportionally equal, so there is a strong incentive
to always play take the five coin bet. If five
dollars a hand is too steep for your bankroll, there
should be plenty of quarter machines for you to
play. Online casinos always offer bets in multiple
denominations, generally having a range that
includes quarter, fifty-cent, dollar, two-dollar,
five-dollar, and sometimes even ten and twenty
dollar betting units.
From studying the
Jacks or Better payout odds table above, you may
notice an inequality between the true odds and
payouts of certain hands. Despite the fact that a
full house is more likely to happen (1 in 86) than a
flush or a straight, it has a larger payout. This
goes against the grain in that the rest of the
schedule is set up to reward hands that are less
likely with higher payouts. Why is this? Again, game
makers have slightly adjusted the payouts, but in
this case it actually favors the player. In terms of
payout percentages, there is a variety among Video
poker machines just like there is with slots.
Remember, the lower-paying 8/5 Video pokers are
likely to be more common. Some casinos don't even
feature the 9/6 variety. And, you definitely won't
see any at bars, strip clubs, or the airport. So be
choosy. It's what will give you the positive
expectation to win and what will make playing more
fun!
-
Play Carefully - Take your
time and make wise decisions. It's you against
the machine and there is no need to rush things.
-
Know the
Paytables - This is one of, if not the most
important keys to success in Video Poker. You
need to understand the paytables for each
machine - understanding these will potentially
allow you to maximize your winnings.
-
Play each
hand like a new game - Since you are playing a
machine try and forget about the last hand
played. The machine has no memory of the last
hand - the random number generator assures this,
so don't fret over what happened last hand -
focus on the next.
-
Practice
makes perfect - the more you play the better you
will be. Learning which cards to keep and which
cards to discard is very important if you are to
take full advantage of the payout tables. If you
use your knowledge consistently i.e. utilize a
strategy, it will help assure that you will meet
the payout percentages of a particular machine.
-
Never keep
a kicker with any pair. Holding a kicker to any
pair reduces your return by 5%.
-
Never draw
four cards if you can draw three to a royal
flush.
-
Always keep
five card winning pat hands with one exception:
if you can, draw one card to a royal.
-
Don't break
a flush even if you can draw one to a straight
flush, but always break a flush to draw to a
royal.
-
Never break
a straight to draw to a straight flush.
-
Never draw
five if you have a jack or better.
-
Don't keep a ten for a four
card draw.
